The Abutilons or Chinese Lanterns fall under a catch all botanical name of Abutilon × hybridum. This species name recognises the uncertain origin of these much loved evergreen garden shrubs. They are hardy under full sun but tolerate some shade and after establishment are frost hardy.
Abutilons benefit from a firm prune after the last frost removing older and straggly wood and reducing the plant by at least a third. Older overgrown plants can often be reinvigorated with an even harder cut back.
