The Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) is native to Central Asia from Japan through to south east Russia. The Atropurpureum Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum') is one of its many cultivars that is a firm garden favourite. Growing to around 6 m tall and 6 m wide it is an ideal tree in a small garden and can grow well in partial shade. It is often multi-stemmed.
It's fine, palmate foliage changes from a deep plum colour in spring to a mid-red in summer followed by a bright scarlet autumn colouring.
