Stoke Red gained attention in the 1920s when surveys found trees growing in Rodney Stoke, Somerset. The trees are vigorous and crop quite heavily. Produces a sharp, slightly astringent juice and a fine, sharp cider. One of the best. Fruit small, striped dark red over yellow to greenish-yellow skin. Late harvest with delayed cropping, but subsequently good yield and a biennial tendency; more than 3 weeks storage.
Very high chill requirement. Best for higher elevations with cold and long winters. Very late to flower, there are few reliable pollination partners - Bess Pool is compatible.
