Cedrus deodara or Himalayan cedar, native to the Himalayas, is an evergreen conifer which in its natural range can reach 40+m in height with a trunk of 3m approx in diameter. In much of Australia a mature height of 20-30m is more likely.
Not suitable for arid climates. Ideal in larger gardens and parkland in temperate and cool temperate regions. It can be grown for many years in a large tub.
It has a pyramidal form with level branches and drooping branchlets - the females cones are long at 7-13cm approx, barrel-shaped and disintegrate when mature, where as the male cones are slightly smaller (4-6cm) and shed their pollen in Autumn. Needle like leaves measuring between 2.5-5cm long approx adorn the branchlets, in dense clusters - Leaf colour varies from bright green to glucose blue-green.
