Dogwoods are small flowering trees of the genus Cornus which is from the Latin cornum, cornu meaning horn which refers to the wood being hard. There are over 50 species in the genus. Many of the desirable ornamental vrieties are cultivars of C. kousa or C. florida. or interspecies crosses.

The majority of dogwoods are deciduous small trees or shrubs although a few are evergreen. They are quite hardy once established, but will perform better with regular, well-spaced deep watering during hot and dry periods.
