David Pickering (1947-2024)

Through his research, generosity and passion for traditional cider apples, David Pickering helped lay the foundations of Australia's modern cider industry.

David Pickering (1947–2024) was one of Australia's leading authorities on traditional cider apples and played a pivotal role in the revival of cider apple growing across the country. He planted his first cider orchard near Orange, New South Wales, in 1981, initially growing fifteen of the cider apple varieties then available in Australia. After discovering the rich cider traditions of Normandy and Brittany during a visit to France in 2004, he began an extensive search for authentic French and English cider cultivars suited to Australian conditions.

Supported by Apple and Pear Australia Ltd, David undertook a study tour of France and England in 2007 to document, identify and assess traditional cider apple varieties growing in Australia. The knowledge gained through this work became the foundation for many of the resources he later shared with growers. Following the tour, he became the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries' principal contact for cider apples, combining his professional background in agronomy with a passion for preserving traditional cider cultivars.

David was instrumental in establishing both Cider Australia and the Australian Cider Awards, helping to foster a vibrant and collaborative cider industry. Through his CiderOz website, publications and generous technical advice, he freely shared practical information on cider apple varieties, orchard establishment and cider production. His classification of cider apples and variety guides remain valuable references for Australian growers today.

We were fortunate to work with David over many years including through our advanced cider-making workshop, where he generously shared his remarkable knowledge of cider apples and traditional cider cultivars. His enthusiasm, kindness and willingness to help others inspired countless growers and cider makers. David's legacy lives on in orchards throughout Australia and in the continuing appreciation of heritage cider apples.
