Ballarat is a large regional city of over 100,000 people located around 35 minutes east of Beaufort on the Western Highway.
EATING OUT
Night times are pretty quiet around here although Beaufort's two Hotels the Golden Age Hotel at 11 Havelock St (the Western Highway) and The Beaufort Hotel at 23 Pratt St are well patronised by locals. They also offer clean, pub-style accommodation.
Being a highway town there are several good cafes in town offering breakfast and lunch, most with good coffee.
STUFF TO DO
If you are around during the first weekend in either May or November check out the Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally - everyone should see this before they die!
While the Grampians are less than an hour away, much closer is Mt Buangor State Park which offers great outdoors experiences.
Don't forget our local wineries - the Pyrenees wine region is world class and renowned for its dry climate vintages.
