Malus x purpurea 'Lemoinei is considered one of the finest M. x purpurea cultivars. It originated at the famous French nursery in Nancy, Victor Lemoin et Fils in 1922 probably as a chance seedling. One of the most popular red-flowering crabapples in the US.
'Lemoinei' is a medium spreading, deciduous tree with maroon leaves. Expanding buds are dark red opening to single and semi-double crimson flowers in late spring followed by cherry-like, maroon fruit.
