M. purpurea 'Aldenhamensis' originated as a chance seedling in 1920 in the garden of the Hon. Vicary Gibbs, Aldenham House, Elstree, Hertfordshire, England. Blooms in Spring and then may bloom a second or third time.

Medium, round to spreading tree, bright carmine-red buds, single and semi-double vinous red flowers 25-30 mm across.Purple-red fruit 15-25 mm diameter.
